After satellite data pinpoints the most likely source of Byzanium, Meta Section sends Sid Koplin to Novaya Zemlya, an island off the northern coast of the Soviet Union.
The immense power needs of the Sicilian Project can be met only by an extremely rare mineral called Byzanium. Although it starred respected and popular actors and boasted a big budget, the movie was a box office bomb and received little critical or popular praise and was also disliked by Cussler. The film was produced by Lord Grade's ITC Entertainment. The book was adapted into a 1980 feature film, Raise the Titanic, directed by Jerry Jameson. It was the first of Cussler's novels with a prologue set long before the main story, describing an incident with consequences resolved in the present day. It tells the story of efforts to bring the remains of the ill-fated ocean liner RMS Titanic to the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in order to recover a stockpile of an exotic mineral that was being carried aboard. Wife Dana's aboard her for reasons best known to the author like a need for romance. So they are and it takes some doing to bring the Titanic into safe harbor with some of the fanfare of Op Sail. At the first 12,000 feet down a man is killed which warns them that the Russians aren't coming, they're there. But the President decides to salvage the old ship.
Gene Seagram is working on this Sicilian Project it gets a lot of interference along with that of Seagram's Dana who feels it interrupts her marriage. The year is 1987 when the US has narrowed its search for byzanium (an esoteric metal like radium which can assure a perfect defense system and peace in our time) to a hold in the Titanic. Acutally it's not all that different from Iceberg (1975) and features the same hero, Dirk Pitt, insuperable in every situation, but it's a better story even if overabundantly plotted. This is already making waves - a $40,000 advertising budget $800,000 paperback sale, and guess what it will look like in shuddering Sensurround.
